A Second Chance in California

Parents across California and the nation were relieved to hear the California Court of Appeals decision last night granting a motion for a rehearing in the ruling that banned homeschooling across the state — unless parents held a teacher’s license qualifying them to teach in public schools. The possibility now exists for changing the decision, when the court holds a new hearing in June. Read more here.

  • I think that all of us homeschool parents should organize one day across the nation where we ALL take all of our homeschooled children to the public school where they “should” attend classes. The results to our public education system would be devastating. There are hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of us, majority of whom pay our taxes (through our property taxes) to the public education system, yet do not take advantage of those funds through the education system. If we flooded our schools with all of our homeschooled children (and private education for that matter), our system would essentially shut down. They do not have the means to support all our children in the current system.

  • Getting them back into public schools is what they want! They’ll just say, “Give us a couple of months to set up trailers and we’ll take you in - prepared or not”. They are already collecting our tax dollars for them…

Pick one day to visit your statehouse, instead!

  • Yeah, I think visitting the statehouse would be more effective.

  • Just one step into “Big Brother” trying to take over our kids. We better be ready to take on this very big battle. I’m not so sure its going to quiet down anytime soon, but we know Who will win in the end. Let us pray and seek His Grace on what to do every step of the way!

  • I am a great grandmother & i am all for home schooling the public school system is so far away from reading, writing & ARITHMATIC that it is a shame. The homeschooled kids come out smarter and well rounded than the public school kids which is a great comendation for their parents.

  • Why should we have to send our children to public school. When they are safer at home where we can teach & protect them. If they pass this bill all they are doing is paying the criminals to hurt our children & get away with it. Why should we have to put our child at risk. And it brakes my heart to know that we don’t have rights to teach our children the way we see fit. What about parents rights!

  • It is very dangerous to consider a constitutional amendment as the solution. The decision California made is already not Constitutional as is–mandatory or regulated education is not an enumerated power under either the California State Constitution or the Federal Constitution. I say it is dangerous to consider an amendment because what the constitution does NOT say is as important as what it DOES. It limits the powers of government by omission (though confusion and abuse is slowly eating this fact away); to try to enumerate every single aspect of our lives in the Constitution provides a means for more aggregious abuse by tyrants, who are still a threat to our form of government. Don’t forget the “tyranny of the majority”–John Stuart Mill. Instead of an amendment, let’s pressure the system to follow the current constitutions and not expand the power of government to enforce a socialist agenda, such as controlling children’s education.

  • I just wrote a huge comment with horrors stories etc. and it was wiped off. Can’t believe it. Just please send your horror stories, ie. school corruption, school lynchings, setting the cps on one because of threatening to homeschool, yes they call it a threat and email michael moore at michaelmoore.com and let him know whats been really going on behind those school doors, what is cps really being used for , i can’t rewrite what i just wrote but we need to be heard by media, our congress people, our govenor, i know i’m not the only who gave the school system years, only to be sorry i, we did. We suffered so badly at their hands and the hands of the state. Email michaelmoore, one email isn’t going to do it. We need every family that has been threantened and frightened by the system to tell their anonymous stories. We cannot go back to the thoroughly corrupt educational system that exists. Most will not go back, so there will be an exodus if this law passes, there will be. So if the state wants to lose us all to other states, so be it. The truth will out it always does and good will come out of this for us , it will. But we need to seize the moment and be heard . This is corruption, its all about money and not education at all. If money were taken out of the equation none of this would be happening. Be heard use the media email m.m. We need to act now! We can do it! Sometimes things need to get really bad before they can get better! If we need to be credentialed than why don’t the fee paying private schools have credentials, most don’t . Because its about money and nothing more. Oh, and self rightousness our country seems to be getting really big on that, we are a democracy not a dictatorship, at present, our country is in great danger of falling into a dictatorship society where God has no place anywhere. So sad, when being a concerned , involved parent is no longer seen as being a good thing , what do we have left?

  • Buster,

The same arguments were made to James Madison when he was working for the Bill of Rights in the first Congress. He worked really hard and initially failed. His opponents and weak supporters told him that he tried valiantly but that he should just give up because there are other more important things to do in the first Congress. Aren’t we glad he didn’t give up and the Bill of Rights were added as an amendment? I certainly am glad.

What else did Congress do that first session? Certainly nothing as consequential as the Bill of Rights.

Also, you’ll notice that the proposed parental rights amendment does not grant ANY power to government. All it does is limits government power. If you think that by getting this amendment the government would then realize new powers than you haven’t been paying attention to what has been happening. Our problem isn’t too little involvement by the government, it is too much. This amendment would totally limit government and would set clear legal principles for when and how governmental intervention is warranted.

  • All of this just worries the heck out of me. I am going to have to become an activist which is not what I have ever intended to be. My goal in life pertaining to my children has been to raise well educated, socially acceptable, catholic children. Now in order to do this I have to take time from them, provide clear and cohesive answers to my friends, persons in authority and nieghbors regarding my homeschooling choices (which keep in mind were never questioned until this court ruling in CA). And I get to do all of this in order to convince some person (that does not know me or mine) that I have the time and clarity of thought to homeschool. Unreal.

  • Hey, I’m a homeschooled kid who loves the way we do school. I belong to West Michigan Homeschool Fine Arts (WMHFA) a homeschooled music program that competes against public schoolers. We practice once a week to their 3-5 times a week, and we still beat almost all of them out every year. We have gone to the state competition every year we have competed. We have something they don’t.
I have seen some of my homeschooled friends leave for public school, and within a year, seen them sleeping around, wearing clothes that barely stay on, or look like they have been painted on. It’s horrible!

  • SusanP,
I understand your concern over the necessity to provide clear and cohesive answers about your choice to homeschool, and your choices within that framework, to persons in authority. It is an unfortunate reality we must exhibit to them why our children are likely ahead of the public schoolers. But why are you concerned about responding to friends and neighbors? When did you last ask them to explain their choice to use public schools and all of the negative social aspects it offers?

  • There are a few issues to look at.

One: The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Thomas Jefferson. In a republic democracy, we all have to be involved in some manner, some level. We are the government. If things don’t work - we are each to blame for it. Evil always “prowls” looking for easy prey.

Two: As Conservatives, we usually have the philosophy of “live and let live” (within reason and common sense). The problem I think is that we let that same idea drive our evangelism in reaching other for Christ. In doing so, we don’t influence souls that could be redeemed. We don’t go into the harvest fields.

The way to win over is by influence. We need to engage in conversations with others - to understand them, and have them understand us. We win by loving and doing (lighting a candle), not by sitting back and complaining about the darkness.
